Market outcomes
| Will Trump endorse JD Vance for president before 2027? | 17% YES | 83% NO |
The question centres on whether Donald Trump will publicly endorse JD Vance for the 2028 presidential race before the end of 2026. Vance, currently serving as Vice President-elect under Trump following the 2024 election, would be a natural successor candidate, yet Trump has historically maintained flexibility in endorsement timing and has shown willingness to back alternative candidates when political circumstances shift. The 18% implied probability on Polymarket's order book reflects substantial scepticism about an early endorsement, suggesting traders expect Trump to either delay a formal backing or potentially support a different Republican contender.
Trump's endorsement patterns in previous cycles offer limited direct precedent. In 2016, Trump secured the nomination without a sitting president's backing. In 2020, as the incumbent, Trump's endorsement carried different weight and timing dynamics. The current scenario—a sitting president with a vice president seeking succession—resembles historical transitions more closely, though Trump's unpredictable public statements and tendency to withhold commitments complicate prediction. The low probability reflects uncertainty about whether Trump will formally endorse anyone before 2027, rather than confidence he will back an alternative.
Key catalysts include Trump's public statements regarding 2028 candidates, any formal campaign announcements by Vance or competing Republicans, and Trump's own political positioning in 2025 and 2026. Media coverage of internal Republican dynamics and polling data showing Vance's viability will likely influence trader sentiment. The resolution hinges on explicit public endorsement language; implicit support or speculation will not trigger settlement.
