Market outcomes
| Kristi Noem impeached in 2026? | 11% YES | 90% NO |
Kristi Noem, confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security in February 2025, could face impeachment proceedings in the House before the end of 2026. The market currently prices this outcome at 11% probability, reflecting the base rate of Cabinet-level impeachment attempts and the political composition of Congress. An impeachment resolution requires only a simple majority vote in the House; Senate conviction and removal are not necessary for this market to settle affirmatively.
Historical precedent suggests Cabinet impeachment remains rare but not unprecedented. The last Cabinet secretary impeached by the House was William W. Belknap in 1876; more recently, Eric Holder faced impeachment votes in 2012 (defeated 258–137) and Alejandro Mayorkas faced articles in February 2024 (passed 214–210, though the Senate did not convict). These cases typically emerge from partisan disputes over agency conduct or policy implementation, particularly regarding immigration enforcement or law enforcement matters—domains directly under DHS purview.
Traders should monitor developments in border security operations, migrant detention policies, and any significant agency controversies that could trigger calls for Noem's removal. Congressional dynamics matter substantially: the current House composition and the appetite for impeachment votes among both parties will shape whether procedural challenges reach a floor vote. Media coverage of DHS operations and any high-profile incidents involving the agency's enforcement actions would be key catalysts to watch through 2026.
